The first step in doing anything is to get a broad view. For time management the tool to use is the Big Picture!
Once you have a broad view of the semester, you will need to focus on the weekly ROUTINE. Routine is important so that you are not negotiating with yourself, every minute of every day. Creating expectations that carry over week to week allow you to have structure built in to your week.
This is where the rubber meets the road for managing your time. Without a plan for the day, you are not even in the realm of motivation. You need a plan to motivate around! Many daily planners are notoriously weak, many designed to high school to do lists. This video will give you some ideas on how to upgrade your daily planner tool and build skills.
We all procrastinate at times. But is it really a good place to be...does it feel good? No way, even if you are doing something fun, in the back of your mind, your work still is a burden. This video gives you a different way to approach procrastination.
I always had difficulty reading my textbooks...and many times I just didn't. If someone would have shown me even the SQ, I would have been in much better shape with my courses. Take a look at an oldie but goodie reading strategy!
Have you ever gotten lost in a novel or historic writing, not knowing what it truly was about. People around you get the theme but you're still struggling? Or maybe you get the theme and the concept but really cannot write a paper on it because you've intuitively "got it" but can't back up your arguments? This video will give you a strategy to help.
There are lots of holes that people fall into when writing an essay. This video will give you a step by step process that may help minimize some of the traps you fall into. It may help you to write an essay more efficiently and more be more effective in your narrative.
Let's keep going with the writing process!
Many students and faculty view exams as strictly an assessment tool for a grade. I propose that you change your perspective to view exams as a feedback loop on whether you learned the material the way the professor wanted you to. It takes some of the pressure off and allows you to use the tests as a learning tool instead of just a source of grades.
Once you have identified why you lost points on the exam (i.e. didn't learn the material ) on the exam, you can be strategic about how you study for the next exam.
Attack the question, outline the essay...
Our reaction to stress is hardwired into our systems from our evolutionary past. Known as the fight or flight syndrome, our bodies react to stress as if the source is a dinosaur. The stress from our present day dinosaurs can be minimized once we know what's going on and learning skills to interrupt the process.
Let's keep talking about stress and the fight or flight syndrome.
Let's go through a session of progressive relaxation and mental imagery.
